Last updated: July 19, 2024

What Does Standpipe Mean?

A standpipe is a tank or vessel typically used to store or transport water or another liquid, whose height is greater than its diameter. Standpipes are used for a variety of purposes, such as for a rigid water transportation system that conveys water vertically upwards against the force of gravity in housing units (for firefighting or drinking water) and for drilling rigs.

Corrosionpedia Explains Standpipe

Standpipes are often prone to corrosion because they contain water. This environment accelerates the creation of electrochemical cells that are responsible for the ion exchange reactions that facilitate corrosion and rust formation. As such, care must be taken to treat standpipe surfaces adequately with linings, coatings and regular inspections to prevent vessel damage, corrosion and cracking.
