Energy conversion is the process of converting one type of energy into another form. Any change in energy in systems can be performed only by removing or adding energy from it, since energy is a variable that is capable of conservation.

For instance, energy from sources like nuclear and fossil fuels can be used conveniently in others forms such as:

  • Heating/cooling
  • Propulsive/rotational energy
  • Electrical energy

Energy conversion is also known as energy transformation.

To get a clearer picture, imagine how a combustion engine transforms potential chemical energy present in oxygen or fuel into thermal energy. This thermal energy is then converted to mechanical form, which can be utilized in the acceleration of vehicles.

Energy conversion has helped various industries, particularly the automobile industry. Before the 1970s, vehicle manufacturers were contented with the car engines that they manufactured. However, the oil embargo that hit in the 1970s led to fuel shortages and price elevation.

Due to this, companies have started measures to tone down pollution and increase gas mileage at a favorable price. This involves the utilization of energy conversion technology that is now evident in automobile gas turbine power plants.
