Water-Dispersible Coating

Last updated: June 11, 2020

What Does Water-Dispersible Coating Mean?

A water-dispersible coating is a type of waterborne coating that, among other purposes, can be used for corrosion prevention. Unlike other coatings where the binder is dissolved, in water-dispersible coatings the binder is dispersed or emulsified as fine, insoluble particles in water. By using water as a dispersing agent, organic solvent emissions can be reduced to produce low or no volatile organic compound (VOC) coating formulations.

Corrosionpedia Explains Water-Dispersible Coating

The water in water-dispersible coatings serves mainly to suspend the emulsion. Once the water evaporates after the paint is applied, the binder particles fuse to form a continuous film.

Water-dispersible coatings possess several benefits that make them ideal for various situations. For example, because they contain little to no flammable content, they can be used safely in areas that are at high risk for fires, explosions and other safety hazards.

Water-dispersible coatings can also be used on damp surfaces, such as those found in marine environments. This characteristic makes them well suited for ships and offshore structures.
