Scupper

Last updated: October 29, 2017

What Does Scupper Mean?

A scupper is an opening, usually in a roof, bridge or roadway that prevents fluids such as rainwater from accumulating. Without a scupper, water or other fluids may pool, placing an excessive load on the walls of a structure or making roads impassable. A scupper is usually made from a material with excellent resistance to corrosion and erosion.

A scupper may also be known as a curb inlet.

Corrosionpedia Explains Scupper

Scuppers are used for many applications. They are frequently used when constructing roads and curbs. These passageways prevent water buildup and promote the transit of cars, bikes and pedestrians. Without a scupper, the rainwater is unable to flow into the sewage system beneath the road.

Scuppers are also used in marine vessels. Since these vessels are constantly taking on water through submersion, splashing or precipitation, it is very important that the water be allowed to drain.
