What Does
Landfill Leachate Mean?
Landfill leachate is the liquid that leaches or drains from a landfill.
Leachate is any disposed liquid that can’t be used in future industrial processes. It can be a toxic liquid, a chemical or any liquid material otherwise unsuitable for use. The term leachate is common in environmental science and is associated with liquids that have harmful dissolved substances such as industrial waste.
Corrosionpedia Explains Landfill Leachate
A landfill can contain a variety of leachate components that are considered to be highly toxic, corrosive, acidic and full of environmental pollutants. Landfill leachate contains both dissolved and undissolved (suspended) materials.
Landfill leachate must be managed and controlled in order to protect the environment from toxic substances and to safeguard nearby infrastructural structures from corrosion. Landfill leachate is controlled by many methods, including:
- Aerobic biological treatment
- Anaerobic biological treatment
- Physiochemical treatment
- Coagulation using lime, alum, ferric chloride and land treatment
- Advanced techniques such as ion exchange or carbon adsorption
