What Does
Industrial Flowmeter Mean?
An industrial flowmeter is a measurement device used to determine the amount of material that is sent through a vessel over a given period of time in an industrial application. The materials being sent through the industrial flowmeter may be liquids, gases, vapors or slurries.
Because flowmeters are frequently in contact with water or corrosive substances, they are subject to corrosion.
Corrosionpedia Explains Industrial Flowmeter
There are a variety of materials that can be measured by industrial flowmeters. Popular liquids that are measured are water, oil and other petrochemicals. Common gases that are measured include oxygen, carbon dioxide, atmospheric gas, nitrogen, argon, mixtures of any of the above and many more. Slurries such as abrasive media and mining byproducts can also have their volume or mass that is moved over a given amount of time measured by industrial flowmeters. Also, vapors such as steam are often measured.
There is a wide variety of industrial flowmeters available for use. The right industrial flowmeter for the job depends on a variety of factors such as fluid type, temperature, velocity and viscosity.
Positive displacement industrial flowmeters are frequently used to measure fluid volume as it travels through a pipe. They do this accurately by collecting a known quantity of fluid and then letting it pass through. A rotameter measures the flow by placing a float in a vertical tube. The height that the float is raised or lowered depends on the amount of flow, and gradations on the tube can be used to measure the flow.
Another common type of industrial flowmeter is an ultrasonic flowmeter, which uses high frequency sound wave transducers and other special equipment to measure the flow by determining the difference it takes the sound to travel upstream versus downstream.
There are many other types of industrial flowmeters in addition to the ones mentioned here.
