Flow Velocity

Last updated: June 15, 2019

What Does Flow Velocity Mean?

Flow velocity is the vector field that is used to describe fluid motion in a mathematical manner. The entire length of the flow velocity is referred to as the flow speed.

Flow velocity in fluids is the vector field that provides the velocity of fluids at a certain time and position.

Flow velocity is also known as macroscopic velocity.

Corrosionpedia Explains Flow Velocity

The flow velocity of fluids efficiently defines everything about the fluid's motion. A lot of fluids' physical properties can be expressed in a mathematical manner. Proper measurement and monitoring of flow velocity can help in many ways, including the prevention of corrosion.

For instance, cavitation is at times regarded as a special type of corrosion-erosion. This is caused by the collapse and formation of vapor bubbles within a liquid close to a metal surface. The process of cavitation eradicates the protective surface through the implosive action of gas bubbles within a fluid. According to mathematical calculations, implosion can generate shock waves that have a pressure of nearly 415 MPa.

The succeeding corrosion attack is the product of hydro-mechanical processes from fluids in areas with low pressure wherein the flow velocity alters, disrupts or changes in terms of the flow of direction that took place.

Thus, industries, specifically those involved in offshore well systems, should perform careful selection of materials along with proper design to minimize damage. It is also recommended to encourage laminar flow and decrease fluid velocity along with increasing the diameter of pipes to effectively prevent and control corrosion damage.
