What Does
Carbolic Acid Mean?
A carbolic acid is an organic compound composed of a phenyl group and a hydroxyl group. It occurs naturally as a crystalline solid aromatic compound that is acidic and volatile. Carbolic acid is generally produced on a large scale by extraction from petroleum.
Corrosionpedia Explains Carbolic Acid
The use of carbolic acid at high temperatures on metal surfaces increases the probability of corrosion on steel. Metal surfaces exposed to carbolic acid and moisture in the 0.2% to 0.6% range has been found to decrease the corrosion rate of low‐carbon steel. However, increasing the moisture level increased the corrosion rate. Temperatures above 200°C greatly increase the corrosion of low‐carbon steel. In addition, carbolic acid with significant sulfur concentrations is more corrosive to various metals in general than pure carbolic acid.
