A concrete substrate is a concrete structure that underlies another material. A concrete substrate can take a variety of shapes and sizes, and can be covered by a multitude of coatings, paints or other materials to protect them from harsh, corrosive environments.

Concrete substrates are found in many different applications such as pillars, blocks and trusses. Decorative concrete substrates include coated concrete sculptures or painted concrete shapes. Concrete substrates are commonly found in industrial flooring.
In order for a concrete object to be considered a concrete substrate it must have some material on top of it such as a polymer coating. There are many different types of polymer coatings commonly used for concrete substrates, including:
- Epoxy coatings – Frequently used because of their ductility and durability
- Polyaspartic coatings – Known for their abrasion resistance and fast drying characteristics
- Paints – Often used to increase the aesthetic appeal of the concrete substrate
Holiday tests are performed to ensure that the coatings intended to protect concrete substrates have not been compromised and to determine their integrity.
