Stainless Steel Corrosion

Last updated: June 3, 2018

What Does Stainless Steel Corrosion Mean?

Stainless steel corrosion is the occurrence of corrosion or rust on a stainless steel object. Although stainless steel does not readily corrode, stain or form rust, "stain less” is not "stain Impossible,” which means that stainless steel is not 100% rust-, corrosion- or stain-free when operating conditions are conducive to corrosion.

Stainless steel corrosion may also be known as inox corrosion.

Corrosionpedia Explains Stainless Steel Corrosion

Stainless steel is generally different from the usual carbon or alloy steel grades because stainless steel contains a high amount of chromium compared to other steel grades. The amount of chromium in stainless steel is generally 10.5% or more, which adds self-resistance to rust, staining, tarnishing and corrosion.

The corrosion resistance limit for various grades of stainless steel material depends on its composition and the constituent elements present in them. Therefore, each grade will have a slightly different response when it is in contact with a corrosive environment.

Some of the corrosion types or conditions that stainless steel remains susceptible to include:

  • Pitting corrosion
  • Crevice corrosion
  • Galvanic / bimetallic corrosion
  • Stress corrosion cracking
  • Weld decay
