Deep Groundbed

What Does Deep Groundbed Mean?

Deep groundbed systems are the deep well anode systems that are installed to distribute current so that it functions as cathodic protection against corrosion of costly infrastructure such as steel pipelines, underground storage tanks and oil and gas well casings. Generally, to prepare an effective groundbed one or more anodes are installed in a vertical position at a depth of 50 feet or more below the earth's surface.

To protect expensive underground infrastructure, a proper site location must be considered where anode systems or deep groundbeds can be installed. Another factor to consider is low soil resistivity. Low soil resistivity conditions are highly corrosive and deep groundbed systems should be installed to protect the infrastructure. Other factors that play an important role when laying deep groundbed systems are:

  • Foreign metallic solvents in the soil
  • Availability of a power source

Deep groundbeds are classified into one of the following types:

  • Shallow vertical groundbeds
  • Shallow horizontal groundbeds
  • Deep well groundbeds
