What Does Tackiness Mean?

Tackiness refers to the occurrence of a paint defect in an applied coating film that possesses a slight stickiness when touched and not uniformly dried. Such paints are applied to metal surfaces as protective coatings against corrosion.

Tackiness is problematic during the process of applying a protective coating. It is usually due to the use of excessive paint film in each application, excessive film dilution, inadequate prior surface preparation or drying.

Tackiness can be prevented by the following methods:

• Painting successive thinner films instead of fewer thicker films
• Proper prior surface preparation
• Better dilution ratios of chemicals or paint to water
• Allowing for prolonged dry times
• Use of proper thinners and temperature settings

During the formation of tack, coagulation may occur. This is due to the molecular structures and physical properties of the components. Coagulation makes spray application, surface modification and paint removal more difficult.
