Cathodic protection is a corrosion prevention technique used to mitigate corrosion damage to active metal surfaces. This type of protection works by intentionally creating a galvanic cell with another, more easily corroded metal (also known as a sacrificial metal). Cathodic protection systems are used in a broad range of applications including, but not limited to buried pipelines, ship hulls, offshore platforms, underground tanks, water heaters, and oil well casings.
While this corrosion protection method is relatively common in several industries, its effectiveness varies depending on its application. Therefore, it is essential that corrosion professionals understand the various factors that can affect the cathodic protection process to ensure that protection systems operate at optimal efficiency.
