Equipment Coating

Last updated: February 14, 2019

What Does Equipment Coating Mean?

Equipment coating is the material applied completely or partially on machines, tools, instruments and other items or articles intended for specific functions, services, purposes or activities to protect them from corrosion or degradation and extend their effective lives with reduced maintenance and parts replacement costs. Equipment coating can also help in the restoration of refurbished equipment to the quality that is almost equal to their original condition.

While the primary consideration in choosing the appropriate equipment coating is its ability and reliability to withstand the environmental conditions and functional demands that the equipment will be subjected to, the coating may enhance the equipment’s appearance.

Corrosionpedia Explains Equipment Coating

The functions, design and other factors affecting various pieces of equipment require coatings that ordinary protective coatings can’t provide.

For instance, carbon steel and even stainless steel in cooling ducts or conditioning towers corrode because they are exposed to flue gases. Also, tools for cutting, molding, shaping and stamping metals into their final configurations can corrode and warp due to the extremely high heat, pressure and speeds that they are subjected to. Degraded tools can produce products that are out of shape or of the wrong dimensions.

Boilers and furnaces need equipment coatings like ceramic coating that can withstand temperatures as high as 1,112 °F (600 °C).

Ceramic coatings are made from inorganic, non-metallic materials like clay, which is combined with other materials to form an equipment coating with outstanding protective properties after curing or baking.

Usually coated on metals that need improvement of their functional capabilities and operational lifespan, ceramic coatings are known for their ability to insulate from high temperatures, high resistance to corrosive substances, as well as the hardness to resist wear between movable metal surfaces and to protect the equipment's dimensional stability.

Ceramic coatings are usually applied by vapor deposition, plasma spraying and detonation, while there is continuing research for newer, more effective methods.

Aside from ceramic coating, there are other materials for equipment coatings that are widely used, as follows:

  • In automotive refinishing coating after body repairs
  • As marine paints
  • As traffic marking paint on the streets, airport runways and on parking lots
  • In oil field equipment and storage vessels
  • In food, chemical process, handling, packaging and other equipment that require varying levels of protection that common coating materials can’t provide
