What Does Welding Mean?

Welding is a materials joining process. Welding involves adding enough energy to the materials that they are able to coalesce. This can happen with or without the use of a filler material and with or without the use of pressure.

Corrosionpedia Explains Welding

Heating materials to their welding temperature often has an effect on their mechanical properties and their ability to resist corrosion. Care must be taken to ensure that a weld joint satisfactorily meets the requirements ascribed to it.

There are many different methods of welding together various types of materials, including:

  • Oxygen-fuel gas mixtures
  • Electrical arcs
  • Electrical resistance

Often times, noble gases such as argon or helium are used to shield the heated material from the atmosphere during welding.
