Understanding Corrosion in Water Pipelines: A Guide for Pipeline Designers

Rubber Repair

Last updated: November 14, 2016

What Does Rubber Repair Mean?

Rubber repair is a type of corrosion inhibiting technique in which a metallic surface that is prone to corrosion is coated with high quality epoxy or vinyl ester resins and synthetic rubber. Depending on the type of rubber lining that needs to be repaired, a soft rubber repair paste or chemical repair paste is used to provide quick and durable rubber repairs to the damaged rubber linings.

Corrosionpedia Explains Rubber Repair

Rubber acts as an insulator and a barrier between a metal surface and harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, rubber linings are sometimes affixed to metallic surfaces that are in contact with water or oxidizing agents. When these rubber linings become damaged, a rubber repair treatment is done by covering it with vulcanized or un-vulcanized rubber. The grades of rubber sheeting covers are:

  • Natural Rubber
  • Ebonite
  • Semi Ebonite
  • Butyl
  • Neoprene
  • EPDM
  • Nitrile
  • SBR
  • Hypalon
  • Viton
