What Does Nanoparticle Mean?

A nanoparticle refers to a material that is less than 100 nm in size. Industrial standards stipulate that the scale from 1 – 100 nm define the size range of a nanoparticle. Nanoparticles have many industrial and commercial purposes, one of which being that they are used to produce corrosion inhibitors and coatings.

Nanoparticles are a sub-classification of ultrafine particles with two or three dimensions greater than 0.001 micrometer and smaller than about 0.1 micrometer.

Different metal oxides are used as nanoparticles to produce corrosion inhibitors. Nanoparticles possess unique mechanical, electronic and physiochemical properties due to their high surface area. Coatings made with nanoparticles as inhibitors provide greater wear and tear resistance.

In some applications, the use of nanoparticles as inhibitors is important because they increase the corrosion efficiency due to an increased surface to volume ratio.
