What Does Milkiness Mean?

Milkiness refers to the occurrence of a paint defect in which a thin white film layer is present on a metal surface shortly after it has been coated. These paints are applied to metal surfaces as protective coatings against corrosion.

Corrosionpedia Explains Milkiness

Milkiness usually occurs in steel coating applications where moisture condenses on the film in humid conditions. It can be prevented by the following methods:

  • Ensure adequate solvent balance when preparing the coating or film
  • Ensure adequate environmental conditions as per the coating vendor supplied datasheet

In the event that milkiness has already occurred, it can be reverted by adjusting the environmental conditions to within ideal ranges and applying heat to the affected surface.
