What Does High Silicon Iron Mean?

High silicon iron refers to alloys with a silicon content of 14.5% or greater. This high amount of silicon generates a greater degree of protection and corrosion resistance in such metals.


Corrosionpedia Explains High Silicon Iron

A high silicon content in alloys enhances corrosion resistance due to the formation of silicon dioxide in the granular structure of a given metal. Residual atoms of silicon are oxidized when exposed to air, producing a film layer that coats the alloy and prevents corrosion. This formed layer is also resistant to acidic attack and infiltration due to sulfuric, phosphoric and nitrogen acids that are some primary causes of acid-based corrosion.
