What Does Cycloaliphatic Mean?

Cycloaliphatic refers to an aliphatic hydrocarbon or compound that contains a ring structure but not a benzene ring, i.e. a non-aromatic-like cyclobutane. A non-aromatic hydrocarbon is cyclic and not as stable as an alicyclic one in nature. Cycloaliphatic compounds include cyclopropane, methylcyclohexane and heptalene.

A cycloaliphatic compound has many industry uses in manufacturing resin, coatings, hardeners and additives.

The products made from cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons have proven to play a role in high-performance coatings, composites and adhesive applications. They provide higher chemical resistance, thermal performance and UV stability.

Cycloaliphatic is type of aliphatic hydrocarbon that contains a cyclo or ring structure in its carbon- carbon chain. When one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced with some alkyl group or amine group in a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon, it produces very useful products such as resins, paints and hardeners.

Aliphatic and cycloaliphatic amines and polyamines are formed when one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by organic groups. In amides and polyamides, a hydrogen atom is also replaced by a carbon/oxygen and organic group.

Cycloaliphatic epoxy resin contains one or more cycloaliphatic rings in the molecule. This resin shows lower viscosity and higher heat temperature resistance than the aliphatic epoxy diluents. Cycloaliphatic curing agents are generally more expensive than regular curing agents.

  • Water/moisture tolerance
  • Resistance to blushing and water spotting
  • Better chemical resistance

The "cyclo" part or ring structure provides better impact resistance and more structural "stretch" than the straight chain curing agent.

Cycloaliphatic amines are a type of curing agent that possesses good film hardness and good gloss. They also have good chemical resistance and mechanical properties, both at heat curing and high temperatures. Cycloaliphatic epoxy resins such as bisphenol are also used for making electrical insulators.
