What Does Cold Heading Mean?

Cold heading is a process that makes use of three techniques: forward extrusion, backward extrusion and upsetting. After cold heading, the work piece undergoes cold working to alter the shape of the metal to near the net shape (almost finished stage) under cold temperatures.

Cold heading is also known as cold forming.

The cold heading or cold forming process is a cost effective solution. The shape of the metal is altered to almost match the finished product under cold temperature conditions. Some industries prefer to perform cold heading procedures at ambient temperatures, although most perform it at cool temperature conditions according to the kind of metal used in the process and the strength of the machinery. There are three common techniques used during cold heading:

  • Forward extrusion
  • Backward extrusion
  • Upsetting

  • Cold header
  • Part former
  • Punches
  • Dies
