What Does Natural Resin Mean?

Natural resin is a product that is derived from plants, contrary to a synthetic resin that is typically produced via chemical synthesis. Natural resins have been widely utilized in the field of mummification.

Corrosionpedia Explains Natural Resin

Natural resin is characterized by a few distinct features. Primarily, it begins as a slightly gummy and sticky material that eventually hardens. It is not soluble in water, but can be dissolved in other compounds such as alcohol. Both of these factors make resin extremely useful.

Resins can be processed or heated in alcohol to make them softer and capable of application onto a material. In some instances, it can be left to dry, and when dry the resin does not allow intrusion of water.

Natural resin is naturally produced by different types of plants as a healing or self-defense mechanism. Typically, resins contain a hydrocarbon base and terpenes which result in a sharp odor. Other compounds can be contained as well.

Though their initial consistency is gummy, soft and sticky when fresh, natural resins can harden up over time, making them suitable for use in paints, varnishes, adhesives, sealants, lacquers and more, making these natural resins highly beneficial.
