Finite element analysis (FEA) refers to the in-depth technical inspection of a structure by dividing it into smaller more manageable elemental units. It is often applied to the inspection of corrosion-prone metal surfaces that are difficult to examine due to structural, geometric or location restrictions.

Finite element analysis (FEA) can be used to estimate electrical currents from galvanic corrosion and material loss over time using a customized finite element method involving computer systems. Finite element analysis works by computationally breaking down a real object into a large number (thousands to hundreds of thousands) of finite elements, such as little cubes. Mathematical equations are generated to predict the behavior of each element when exposed to certain external factors. A computer program then sums up all of the individual behaviors to predict the behavior of the actual object.
