Definition - What does Corrosion Type mean?

A corrosion type is a classification of the physical conditions or chemical reactions responsible for the deterioration of a metal surface, often with the formation of rust.

Corrosionpedia explains Corrosion Type

Each corrosion type is based on a different cause mechanism. Some corrosion types and their cause mechanisms include:

  • Pitting corrosion - Fluid stagnation on a metal.
  • Galvanic corrosion - Formation of groves on a metal surface.
  • Crevice corrosion - Formation of cracks.
  • Concentration cell corrosion - A metal's reaction within an electrolytic environment.
