Last updated: July 19, 2024

What Does Shot Abrasive Mean?

Shot abrasive refers to a blasting material that is used to polish, smooth or clean a material's surface (usually metal) by applying friction to it at high pressure. It is used to facilitate the removal of debris, surface contaminants, rust and other formations that often lead to severe corrosion on a metal surface if left unaddressed.

Shot abrasives are used in a wide range of industries including construction, aerospace, automotive and petroleum.

Corrosionpedia Explains Shot Abrasive

Shot abrasives can be any mineral or material with a hardness greater than the material to be polished.

Shot abrasives are applied by using a propellant in the form of compressed air or a pressurized liquid. Two main technologies are used to apply shot abrasives: wheel blasting, which propels a liquid, and air blasting, which is used to propel gaseous fluids.
