What Does Surface Tolerance Mean?

Surface tolerance refers to the degree of cleanliness, receptiveness and effectiveness of a substrate metal to support a coating that is applied to its surface as a corrosion prevention method.

Surface tolerance is directly proportional to the effectiveness of a corrosion preventative coating.

An ideal surface tolerance is characterized by minimal roughness, debris and chemical reactivity. Surface tolerance can be improved by performing the following preparatory steps prior to applying a coating or other form of treatment:

  1. Clean the surface thoroughly
  2. Remove any loose paint, rust or metal scraps
  3. Repair holes, perforations and dents
  4. Prime the surface
