What Does
Surface Tolerance Mean?
Surface tolerance refers to the degree of cleanliness, receptiveness and effectiveness of a substrate metal to support a coating that is applied to its surface as a corrosion prevention method.
Surface tolerance is directly proportional to the effectiveness of a corrosion preventative coating.
Corrosionpedia Explains Surface Tolerance
An ideal surface tolerance is characterized by minimal roughness, debris and chemical reactivity. Surface tolerance can be improved by performing the following preparatory steps prior to applying a coating or other form of treatment:
- Clean the surface thoroughly
- Remove any loose paint, rust or metal scraps
- Repair holes, perforations and dents
- Prime the surface
