What Does
Scarifying Mean?
Scarifying refers to the removal of rust or debris build up on a metallic surface by physically scraping or otherwise applying force to the metal’s surface. The use of a scarifier is considered to be surface normalization.
Corrosionpedia Explains Scarifying
Scarifying is often performed industrially on the interior surfaces of pipes by the use of a robotic arm. The arm is capable of pivoting and rotating, and has one or more nozzles attached to it depending on the degree of removal required.
The arm accelerates and decelerates down the length of the pipe while rotating the nozzle assembly. Some scarifying equipment have jet sprays that can be used to flush a pipeline with chemicals as a form of corrosion chemical treatment.
