Ultrasonic leak testing is a method that uses high-frequency sound to identify and locate liquid or gas leaks in pipes, vessels, etc. When leaks exist, turbulent flow occurs as the fluid moves from the high-pressure side to the low-pressure side of the leak. This turbulence creates unique sound patterns that can be heard through the headphones of ultrasonic leak testing equipment.
Ultrasonic leak testing is also known as acoustical leak testing.

While some leaks (such as air leaks from a tire) can be heard with the human ear, small leaks produce sounds in the ultrasonic range that are beyond the limits of human hearing. Ultrasonic leak detectors, which are sensitive enough to allow users to hear the blink of an eye, can be used to follow ultrasonic leaks to the loudest point.
Ultrasonic leak test equipment can be calibrated to focus on a specific band of sound, allowing operators to filter out other noises such as wind, traffic and operational sounds. This characteristic makes it possible to perform ultrasonic testing in open areas without compromising testing accuracy.
