What Does 317L Stainless Steel Mean?

317L stainless steel refers to a low-carbon, molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel. This steel provides greater resistance to chlorides than Type 304L and Type 316L stainless steels.

The high corrosion resistance properties of 317L stainless steel make it suitable for highly corrosive acidic chloride environments such as in pulp and paper mills.

Although 317L stainless steel has the same high strength and corrosion resistance as 317 steel, it produces stronger welds due to its low carbon content.

317L stainless steels are manufactured in various shapes such as round bar, plate, sheet and pipe.

Type 317L stainless steel is a low-carbon molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel. It provides superior corrosion resistance compared to Type 316L in highly corrosive process environments, especially in chlorides or other halides. The low carbon content makes it suitable for welding without sensitization to intergranular corrosion caused by chromium carbide precipitation in the grain boundaries. They are non-magnetic in the annealed condition but exhibit a little magnetism during welding or after welding.

Type 317L stainless steel was first developed to resist attacks by sulfurous acid compounds. Consequently it has a proven ability to combat corrosion in other environments and is now used for many other industrial applications. Other features of 317L stainless steel include:

  • Higher creep, stress-to-rupture and tensile strength than other stainless steels.
  • Reduced intergranular precipitation of chromium carbides during welding and stress relieving.
  • A reduced possibility of corrosion failure from intergranular attack.
  • Resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, which makes 317L a successful product for a variety of highly corrosive environments.
