Green Roof

Last updated: January 26, 2019

What Does Green Roof Mean?

A green roof is defined as the rooftop of a structure, typically a building, which is covered fully or partially by vegetation. This vegetative layer is grown with the intention of increasing the building’s overall energy efficiency, mainly by reducing its internal temperature. Green roofs accomplish this temperature reduction by:

  • Shading – Green roofs block some of the sunlight striking the roof.
  • Evapotranspiration – Plants absorb water through their roots and use the surrounding heat to evaporate the water.

Corrosionpedia Explains Green Roof

Green roofs are increasing in popularity in sustainable construction projects because they reduce a building's internal temperature and associated energy demands. In addition to energy reduction, green roofs also provide the following benefits:

  • Aesthetic improvement – Green roofs can serve as a scenic recreational area for building occupants and guests.
  • Reduction in the heat island effect – The heat reflected from conventional rooftops can increase the temperature of the surrounding environment, particularly in urban areas. The shading from green roofs helps to minimize this reflected heat.
  • Reduced air pollution – By reducing energy demands, green roofs can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related to energy production. Vegetation can also help remove air pollutants and slow the rate of ozone formation.
  • Storm water management – Green roofs can help capture, absorb and return water to the atmosphere. This reduces the amount of water runoff originating from rooftops.
