Definition - What does Ponding Water Resistant mean?
A ponding water resistant coating protects roof tops and architectural surfaces from damage caused by rain and standing water that stays for 48 hours or more. High solid silicone roof coatings help protect structures from corrosion, cracks, dents, leaks, rusting, etc. Once applied to a rooftop, this coating forms a waterproof, elastomeric white membrane that protects the material from harsh environmental conditions.

A widely used ponding water resistant coating is "high solid silicone coating." High solid silicone-based coatings have a wide range of uses. Apart from roof top coating, they provide elemental protection for architectural surfaces such as vertical walls, masonry, concrete, metal, single ply membranes and sprayed-in-place urethane foam systems. Some specifications for this coating material are:
- Flammable characteristics – This coating has Class “A” non-combustible and Class “B” combustible credentials as tested under UL 790 procedures over spray foam and single ply roofing systems.
- Tensile strength - 331 psi at 23 °C (73.4 °F) and 432 psi at -17 °C (1.4 °F).
- Elongation (break) – 192% at 23 °C (73.4 °F) and 216% at -17 °C (1.4 °F).
- Viscosity – 8000 to 12000 centipoise.
- Weathering / UV protection – up to 5000 hours.
- Temperature Stability range – 177 °C (350 °F) to -37 °C (-34.6 °F).
- Flash point – 143 °C (289 °F).
This coating is not recommended for structures that continuously remain below 10 °C (50 °F). A coating application must be applied to a dry surface that remains dry for at least one hour after the application.
