Interferometry

Last updated: January 12, 2019

What Does Interferometry Mean?

Interferometry refers to a measurement technique that involves the use of light, radio or sound waves to determine certain characteristics of a metallic object. Surface characteristics such as hardness, toughness and durability may be indicators of a metal's corrosion resistance.

Corrosionpedia Explains Interferometry

Interferometry evaluates an object's characteristics by calibrating its response to a given light, radio or sound wave based on its interference with the object's surface. This is referred to as displacement monitoring and is used for calibration and mechanical stage motion control in precision machining.

Performing such inspections facilitates corrosion monitoring and evaluation based on the growth of an oxide layer on a metal such as aluminium. Aqueous corrosion processes are ideal without physically contacting the sample. Devices used in these configurations are referred to as interferograms, which provide the qualitative evaluation of a metal's physical characteristics related to the process kinetics of corrosion, corrosion dynamics and oxide growth.
