Sodium hypochlorite is a chemical substance with the formula NaOCl. It is considered to be the sodium salt of hypochlorous acid and is used as liquid bleach, an oxidizing agent and a disinfectant when mixed with water. Due to its highly corrosive properties, well-examined corrosion prevention measures must be put in place for systems that contain sodium hypochlorite.

Sodium hypochlorite only occurs in solutions as it is highly unstable in other states. When in the solution state, it gives off high levels of chlorine gas, which results in a hazardous environment if in contact with stainless steel. There is a high tendency for stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion to occur in such environments.
