Surface-Tolerant Epoxy

Last updated: June 1, 2018

What Does Surface-Tolerant Epoxy Mean?

Surface-tolerant epoxy refers to epoxy that is highly corrosion and abrasion-resistant and designed to protect materials from extreme industrial and marine conditions. This type of epoxy has many industrial uses—among them, sealer, primer and coatings are prominent.

Surface-tolerant epoxy coatings are designed to be applied over surfaces with minimal or no surface preparation. They are suitable where no sand blasting is possible, and can be used on steel and concrete surfaces for protection against corrosive environments in the industry.

Corrosionpedia Explains Surface-Tolerant Epoxy

Surface-tolerant epoxy is epoxy that is rust and moisture-tolerant as well as wet-tolerant. The surface-tolerant epoxy primer can be used on little or no prepared surfaces with any humidity and wet surfaces. These epoxies are anti-corrosive, surface-tolerant and water-dilatable. This is very useful where metal has the potential to corrode. This epoxy can be formulated for marine and other extreme industrial environment applications. It is also usable for immersion resistance in fresh and saline water. It is tough, and its abrasion-resistant coating offers good long-term corrosion protection. This epoxy coating produces excellent adhesion with iron and non-ferrous substrates. The performance of surface-tolerant coatings depends on the appropriate specifications, formulations and application.

Surface-tolerant epoxy sealer is a transparent rust-penetrating sealer that is designed to seal and strengthen wet and porous rusty steel surfaces. This delivers excellent results when used for the encapsulation of old coatings, considering feasibility and economics.

This epoxy can be applied on a range of substrates, for example:

  • Hand-prepared rusty steel
  • Hydro-blasted steel and abrasive blast cleaned
  • Range of intact & aged coatings

It is also suitable for protection in both open air and immersion conditions. The following can be protected from using this epoxy:

  • Storage tanks
  • Piping, roof decks, water towers
  • Structural steel and plant equipment
  • Marine vessels, offshore structures
  • Other variant surfaces exposed to humidity, chemicals and corrosive environments
